Whale Watching Tour

Channel Islands Helicopters is the only tour operator in the Northern hemisphere with this type of service, our pilots even radio the position of the whales to the local Whale Watching Boats! This tour ventures offshore, over the Santa Barbara Channel for a whale and dolphin spotting extravaganza.  We have the ability to spot whales and dolphins in a 10 mile radius, so keep your eyes peeled and bring your camera.

Like other offshore tours we lift off from Oxnard Airport and head straight out to the ocean.  This tour also offers incredible views along Channel Islands Harbor, Silverstrand Beach and Port Hueneme before heading back home!

Sites and Attractions: depending on the Season you may see, Blue, Grey, Minke, Orca, Humpback or Risso's whales.  Dolphins by the hundreds are almost guaranteed, as well as breath taking views of the Channel Islands National Park including Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands!

Whale Watching from Above with Channel Islands Helicopters

Channel Islands Whale Watching Captain Frank

What began as a casual conversation several days ago, ended with a day that I will remember for the rest of my life. I could go on for pages, and probably lose all of you who read these blogs, so I will try to do my best to keep it mildly interesting. Liz from Channel Islands Sportfishing Center asked me a few days ago if I was interested in taking a flight with Josh from Channel Islands Helicopters. I admit, I was apprehensive, yet have always wanted too…so I agreed…pending weather, schedules, etc (giving myself an out).

The day finally arrived.

The weather was great, the boat was out and I had cleared my desk. I had no excuse. Scheduled to fly were Liz, myself and Larry from The Final Code…our website creator. I had told my dad the day before over breakfast, just probing to see if he would be interested…and of course he was…but the helicopter only seats 3. I asked him to take our pics as we lifted off, and he agreed arriving at the airport 15 minutes prior too.
As fate would have it, Larry decided to give up his seat for my dad and my dad was on!

Liz and I sat in the back and the old man armed with his Nikon was up front with Josh. Liz is a seasoned veteran, and between her and Josh were kind of feeding on my apprehension. We lifted off, and well, all I can say is just incredible. If you have never done this before, I highly recommend it.
While I am no stranger to flight, and having spent 35 years on the water around the Channel Islands, this was a totally new experience.
Seeing the Islands from the air puts it all in perspective.

Anacapa Island Channel Islands Whale Watching

On our way across the channel we observed pod after pod of common dolphin and then, there it was…the grand prize…a Blue Whale.

I have observed these magnificent animals for years at sea level, but to observe from above was indescribable.

The animal was beautiful, simply flawless. Hydrodynamic by evolution, designed to move through the water with the least bit of drag. The sight of the largest animal on our planet moving effortlessly below us was just humbling.

We then left our Blue as it headed for the depths and toured both the rugged North Shore of Anacapa as well as the dramatic South Shore. To see the Island from the air after having circumnavigated it countless times throughout the past decades adds total new perspective.

Ranger 85 Channel Islands Whale Watching

We were able to fly by the Ranger 85 as they were observing the same Blue Whale. Edward of course was onboard and captured amazing images of our Blue as it rose to the surface time and time again. He managed to get a few images of us in the air as well. Thank you Ed…these are forever.

Many thanks to the team of Channel Islands Helicopters. Josh, you run a first class operation…I look forward to flying with you again.
Liz…thank you so much for planting the seed. I always marvel with your stories from past flights, but now I know. Thank you so much.
Larry, you missed a great flight. Thank you however, as it afforded me a lifetime memory with my father.

Pop, I’m so glad we had this opportunity. I’m sure it brought back memories. (My father loves to fly…he has a long history dating back to his early days in the Navy…he’s 82 now).

See you all back on the water,

Captain Frank

My Vacation to California, rode Channel Islands Helicopters for an Island Tour

Well, I really need to do this again! That was my thinking when our helicopter was gently touching down after an exhilarating, picturesque 30 minute excursion to the Channel Islands. I was looking to try something new on my vacation to California, and had never been on a helicopter ride.

I thought the expense would be something beyond my budget. But, thanks to an ad I saw for 50% off on the Ventura County Now website, it was VERY affordable. My friend and I split the $150, and were rewarded with an unforgettable experience! First of all, the owner, Josh, and his team were friendly and accommodating. Alex was our knowledgeable pilot, and he was a great tour guide. We were undecided about what we wanted to check out from the unique view once we donned our headsets and lifted off in flight. So, we took Alex's advice and headed out to Anacapa Island.

The coastline looked spectacular from our vantage point, the clear day affording us a view of the beach that went on for miles, to the distant hills and mountains behind Oxnard. But that was only about the first five minutes of our trip!

Keeping a lookout for sea creatures large and small, we headed to our destination. I saw a sea lion dipping up and down searching for food, but was more excited to see the islands, (Anacapa Island is actually made up of THREE islands), as they were primitive and relatively uninhabited. I could imagine the native Chumash Indians making this their home long ago while fishing and hunting to survive in this beautiful spot. Alex pointed out the landmark Arch Rock, and I got postcard quality pictures on my cell phone!

I plan to enlarge some and display them when I get home. We also saw the lighthouse, several openings of interconnected caves that Alex explained kayakers enjoy, and other Channel Islands in the distance. We flew around the entire island, taking pictures and video non-stop.

It didn't feel like we were moving the 120 mph Alex said we were traveling, until he went into a sharp banked turn and dipped closer to the Pacific Ocean. Then we knew we were! We saw a massive sailboat, all the passengers and crew giving us a friendly wave as we circled above them. Then we started back to the heli-pad. I took more pictures, and just spent the rest of the trip back admiring my surroundings. We touched down softly, and waited for the aircraft to cool down and overhead rotors to stop before hopping off. That was when I came to the obvious conclusion; I REALLY need to do this again! Thanks for an unforgettable experience, Channel Islands Helicopters. I have the pictures to prove it.
